Nathan Steuer won Pro Tour Secrets of Strixhaven in Las Vegas piloting Selesnya Landfall, and if you weren't paying attention to the Standard metagame before this weekend, you probably should be now. This is his second Pro Tour title and it ties him with Seth Manfield at five career titles total. The guy just keeps winning.
The Meta Read That Mattered
Here's what made this win interesting. The field at MagicCon Las Vegas was heavily saturated with Izzet spell-slinging strategies. That was the expected best deck going in, and most players showed up prepared to either play it or beat the mirror. Steuer did neither. He brought Selesnya Landfall into a room that wasn't ready for it and punished people for tunneling on one archetype.
325 players qualified for the event. Steuer went flawless on Day 1, stumbled a bit on Day 2 but still locked in a 12-4 record good enough for the 6 seed in the Top 8. His draft record was 5-1 in Secrets of Strixhaven Limited and he went 7-3 in Standard. Not a dominant stat line on paper, but the Top 8 is where his experience showed up.
Why Selesnya Landfall Worked
The deck's positioning was the story. Izzet decks were tuned to fight other Izzet decks and control mirrors, which meant they were light on the kind of interaction that punishes a deck going wide on board while ramping. Selesnya Landfall does exactly that. It develops its mana, triggers landfall payoffs, and presents threats that demand specific answers the Izzet builds weren't mainboarding.
It wasn't a rogue deck by any stretch. People knew the archetype existed. But Steuer's specific build and sideboard plan were optimized for the expected field in a way that most players didn't mirror. That's the difference between knowing a deck is good and actually running it back into a hostile meta with the right 75.
Price Impacts You Should Know About
The financial ripple from this Pro Tour is real. Diabolic Revelation has been the biggest price story coming out of Secrets of Strixhaven, climbing from around $2 up past $16 at its peak. That's an 8x move on a card that was sitting in bulk bins a month ago. If you had copies, congratulations. If you didn't, the window to buy cheap is closed.
Selesnya Landfall staples are also ticking up. Expect anything in Steuer's 75 that was previously underpriced to adjust over the next week. This always happens after a Pro Tour win and the smart play is to buy what you actually need for your deck now before the casual market catches up to the competitive demand.

MagicCon Broader Takeaways
Beyond the Pro Tour itself, MagicCon Las Vegas pulled 25,000 attendees over three days. The big reveal from the headliner panel was a Marvel Super Heroes collaboration with Magic featuring Paul Bettany from the MCU. No gameplay details yet, but Wizards is clearly leaning into the crossover IP strategy that's been printing money for them since Universes Beyond took off.
The Secret Lair Commander Deck: Goblin Storm also drops May 18 through the Secret Lair storefront. And Alchemy: Strixhaven hits Arena on May 19 for the digital crowd.
What This Means for Friday Night Magic
If you play Standard at your LGS, expect to see more Selesnya Landfall in the next few weeks. Pro Tour wins always cascade down to local metas within a couple of weeks. The counterplay is straightforward though. Board wipes and targeted removal for the landfall payoffs. If your local meta was already on Izzet, you might actually be in a decent spot since those decks can adapt their sideboards faster than Selesnya can reinvent itself.
Home Town Cards runs Friday Night Magic Commander every Friday at 6 PM here in Austin. If you want to dodge the Standard chaos entirely, Commander is always an option and the pods are casual.
The Steuer Question
At this point you kind of have to ask where Steuer ranks among active players. Five career Pro Tour titles. Consistent finishes across formats. The guy qualified for both the 2027 Limited Championship and the World Championship off this single event. He's building a resume that's hard to argue with.
